Over the Christmas holiday week (does that sound like ages ago to you too?!), I was back in New Hampshire visiting with family. It’s always nice to get out of Arizona and take in a week’s worth of winter wonderland weather. I think there was a few feet of snow on the ground while I was there.

I also wanted to set up a few test photo shoots in Boston to continue building on my portfolio a bit more. I arranged for two, but we only got to shoot one of them. Unfortunately, even a well planned test can be ruined by something as simple as the weather. We had to cancel a session on the beach because of 40mph winds and sub zero temperatures. Yea, cold!

I did get to arrange a test with Jessie of Dynasty Models in Boston though. The brick buildings and little bit of winter atmosphere in the city create a nice environment. We had fun roaming from her apartment near Northwestern University down to the Christian Science Center. Hope you enjoy the series.

The past few weeks have really taken off for me. It has been a non-stop marathon of photo shoots, expanding my network, learning new procedures and building mutually beneficial relationships. One of those new relationships is with the incredible team at The Agency Arizona. We’ll be collaborating on projects as I continue to build my portfolio in the direction and style I’ve been honing.

I have spent more time in the production and planning elements of my concept photo shoots, really taking the time to flush out a consistent theme and editorial series of photos. That includes compiling sketches for each photo session. It’s about creating a style and not only higher quality of images, but quality production all around. This editorial photo set is with three models from The Agency Arizona up in the Payson pine trees. Hope you enjoy this fun-filled camping theme.

The ability to bring out the right emotions and expressions in your subjects is nearly as important as a properly exposed and composed photograph. It’s an essential part of being a portrait, wedding or commercial photographer. If your subject is uncomfortable, it’s going to be really obvious in the photographs. I find sharing the editorial vision and what you want the photo shoot to become is always helpful. It involves your subject and makes them an active participant in your vision.

Sometimes, you have to get down right silly! Ask any of the great models I’ve worked with in the past, and they’ll tell you just how silly. Check your dignity at the door and go out there to have fun and create some great images in the process. If you want to read more on this, check out a previous post of mine on the Digital Photography School blog.

A few weeks back I took a trip down to Tucson with Laura of S.I.M. to meet and set up a few photo shoots with photographer Daron Shade. I was pretty deathly sick with a nasty cough, but we managed to snap out a few different sets while there. This short (hour long) lifestyle session with Britt was shot in the bright sun at around 1:30pm. Working the shade spots and back light ensured relatively even light across her, something I look for in my images. Hope you enjoy the set.
